Essential Tools for Every Homeowner - Brought to You by Property Pro Checks Home Inspections

==============================================================================================

Many homeowners face small repairs or maintenance tasks around the house. Having a basic set of tools can empower you to tackle these issues quickly and efficiently. The following items are essential tools, but this list is by no means exhaustive. Feel free to ask a Property Pro Checks Home Inspections inspector during your next inspection about other tools that you might find useful.

Key Tools to Keep on Hand

1. Plunger

A clogged sink or toilet is one of the most inconvenient household problems. With a plunger on hand, you can usually remedy these plumbing issues quickly. It’s best to have two plungers—one for the sink and another for the toilet.

2. Combination Wrench Set

A combination wrench set includes two types of wrenches: one end is open, and the other is a closed loop. Nuts and bolts come in both standard and metric sizes. Therefore, you’ll need both sets of wrenches. For most control, always pull the wrench toward you. Avoid pushing and be careful not to over-tighten.

3. Slip-Joint Pliers

Use slip-joint pliers to grab hold of various items, such as nails, nuts, and bolts. These pliers are versatile due to their jaws, which feature both flat and curved areas. The built-in slip-joint allows for quick adjustments to the jaw size.

4. Adjustable Wrench

Adjustable wrenches can be awkward to use and might damage a bolt or nut if not handled properly. However, they are ideal when you need two wrenches of the same size. Always screw the jaws all the way closed to avoid damage.

Essential Supplies for Home Maintenance

5. Caulking Gun

Caulking seals cracks and gaps in various structures and certain types of piping. It helps in noise mitigation, thermal insulation, and water control. Always apply caulk to clean, dry areas for the best results.

6. Flashlight

No tool is useful without proper visibility. A good flashlight helps you inspect situations effectively. A traditional two-battery flashlight is usually sufficient. Remember that larger flashlights can be unwieldy.

7. Tape Measure

For measuring home projects, always use a tape measure, not a ruler or yardstick. Tape measures come in various lengths, but a 25-foot option is the most practical. Remember to measure everything at least twice to ensure accuracy.

8. Hacksaw

A hacksaw is invaluable for cutting metal objects like pipes, bolts, and brackets. Although hacksaws appear flimsy, they can cut through tough metals easily. Focus your investment on a quality hacksaw frame, as the blades are replaceable.

Additional Safety Gear

9. Torpedo Level

A level is essential for determining if objects are oriented correctly. A torpedo-level shows whether something is horizontal, vertical, or at a 45-degree angle. Ensure the bubble in the viewfinder is centered.

10. Safety Glasses / Goggles

Always wear safety glasses or goggles for tasks involving a hammer or power tool. You should also protect your eyes while mixing chemicals.

11. Claw Hammer

A good hammer is one of the most important tools to own. Use it to drive and remove nails or pry wood loose. A 16-ounce hammer is the best all-purpose choice for most tasks.

12. Screwdriver Set

It’s wise to have four screwdrivers: small and large versions of both flathead and Phillips-head types. While electrical screwdrivers are convenient, they can’t replace the versatility of manual ones that reach tight spaces without damaging screws.

Specialized Tools

13. Wire Cutters

Wire cutters are specifically designed for cutting wires and small nails. The side-cutting style is handy but may not be strong enough for thicker nails.

14. Respirator / Safety Mask

Even though modern paints and coatings are less toxic, they can still contain dangerous chemicals. Wear a mask to prevent inhaling harmful substances. Disposable masks typically come in packs of 10, while full and half-face respirators can stop very fine particles.

Versatile Solutions for Repairs

15. Duct Tape

Duct tape is extremely strong and adaptable. Originally used for military equipment repairs, it is now a vital item in home emergency kits. Its water-resistant and sticky nature makes it perfect for various quick fixes.
